New Post: How Wrong Was I on Southampton? I had them relegated

By, Kyle Gibson

I had been avoiding writing this post for weeks. Even though I have admitted I was wrong before, it is never a fun thing to do from a guy that gave himself the nickname “Soccertes.”

However, after Southampton demolished Sunderland 8-0 today to move into third place, it was time to admit I was wrong.

After all, I had this team RELEGATED in my EPL preseason predictions. Here was my write-up, without a word changed.

18. Southampton– The real darlings of last season experienced a nightmare summer, in which it gained over 100 million pounds…at the expense of its best players.

First Liverpool took its brilliant stars Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren to the tune of a combined 49 million pounds. Then, Arsenal signed up and comer Calum Chambers for a reported 20+ million deal and Manchester United snatched up Left back Luke Shaw. That’s three defenders, a goal scoring midfielder and a striker. All starters.

Tottenham Hotspur made matters worse when it signed Southampton’s manager from last season, Mauricio Pochettino. New manager Ronald Koeman is experienced, but not with the rigors of an EPL season. Now that he doesn’t have much to work with, talent wise, it will be even harder. Striker Jay Rodriguez is out for most of the season with an ACL issue.

The new additions, besides Goalkeeper Fraser Forster, won’t provide any real upgrades.

After a brilliant season last year, it’s a shame that Southampton will probably not return to that level in years.

Oh, how wrong I was. Ronald Koeman’s experience was more than ready for the Premier League. This team plays so well from back to front that it at times looks like the most complete team not named Chelsea or City.

One thing I should have also written about was Morgan Schneiderlin. He wanted out over the summer, because he thought he was the one that would go down with his ship. He stayed, though and has made even more of a name for himself than he would have elsewhere. His three goals is second only to Graziano Pelle, who has seven.

You’re bound to get a few wrong, but these guys are making me look like Eric Wynalda over here.
