Plenty of people have scratched their heads at Arsene Wenger not buying another striker this summer.
The question I’ve been wondering, though, is does he have to?
After all, what I saw from Yaya Sanogo in today’s 3-0 Community Shield win was impressive. Sure, he didn’t score, but Sanogo did plenty of the dirty work, setting up the first goal, winning headers and making tough runs.
Does he even have to score? Arsenal ran a 4-5-1 today. Frankly, the talented midfield (Ozil, Sanchez, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey, Cazorla) can score plenty of goals, as can main striker Olivier Giroud. Why bring in a big name striker that, along with Giroud, will demand minutes in a 1 striker system?
In games when Wenger needs a second striker, Sanogo can do the dirty work that Giroud hates. Don’t judge Sanogo on his goals in this system, just how well he fits in.
After today’s game, I’m willing to give Yaya Sanogo a try. I just wonder if Arsene Wenger is as well.
