Update: Sterling was indeed named to the 11. I was wrong in saying Danny Welbeck would be the one he replaced though, as Sterling is in for Lallana.
This is pure speculation, but isn’t that a beautiful thing sometimes? I see Roy Hodgson making one or two changes from the last friendly and going for it against Italy.
Here’s my projected lineup.
Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson
Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling
This is a 4-2-3-1 with Gerrard and Henderson playing the deep lying midfield spots. Rooney will fit in centrally behind Sturridge, leaving Sterling and Lallana to try and find a way behind the Italian defense.
I know it’s a risk to say Sterling, but Hodgson has to open his eyes here and play him. Danny Welbeck’s form is nowhere near that of Sterling and he has been playing Welbeck in a wide role that Sterling would thrive in.
I think England wins this one, too.
The score will be 1-0, With Mario Balotelli terrorizing the England goal late.
