You lose, Sepp.
When it was announced that the 2022 FIFA World Cup Finals would be held in Qatar people had thoughts like “Wow, that’s a hot place. Especially in summer. The World Cup is going to be held in the middle of summer. The sun there is like a death ray, Oh, God, I’m burning up just thinking about it!”
Besides allegations of bribery and beating out other, better soccer nations, what has Qatar had to lose, besides being perhaps the most unpopular idea FIFA has ever had?
Well now, FIFA has decided that this World Cup will not be played in the heat of summer. Instead, it will be played sometime from November-January in 2022.
This move comes 8 years out, two World Cups away, but it’s such a move from tradition that is has the potential to alienate fans and confuse teams used to the traditional prep for World Cup finals.
This is a potentially life saving move, since Qatar can get up to 122 degrees (!!!!!!) over the summer. Imagine Scandinavian teams running around in that weather.
Qatar put a bold face on it, though, when thinking of playing that World Cup in the summer. I found this on the Wikipedia page.
“Each of the five stadia will harness the power of the sun’s rays to provide a cool environment for players and fans by converting solar energy into electricity that will then be used to cool both fans and players at the stadia. When games are not taking place, the solar installations at the stadia will export energy onto the power grid. During matches, the stadia will draw energy from the grid. This is the basis for the stadia’s carbon-neutrality. Along with the stadia, we plan to make the cooling technologies we’ve developed available to other countries in hot climates, so that they too can host major sporting events.”
Sounds like more BS than the bid itself.
The average high for November is 84 degrees, while December is normally 75 and January is 72. So if we have to play the World Cup there, at least it will be safer for the players. That’s the best thing I can say for this FIFA fiasco.
Soo….if you’re scoring at home, stop. FIFA has lost. This dumb, potentially corrupt idea is ruining the image of World soccer and will keep doing so until it’s over in 2022.
